The star has been seen sporting a number of experimental looks throughout her time in the spotlight, but she manages to pull them off effortlessly. However, Paula explains that this was not always the case in the past. Her love of dressing up and experimenting with clothes started at a very early age and she would often raid her mother’s wardrobe for inspiration. In a recent interview with newspaper, The People, she explained how her mother would encourage her to experiment with clothes. “My mom would go to vintage stores, hand-me-down stores, and bring back these inexpensive adult clothes.”

Vintage style

This is the style that Paula grew up with and is where her fun, vintage and kooky sense of style came from. Luckily Paula has learnt from her experimenting with fashion though, and has emerged looking quite the fashion queen – with her own classy but individual sense of style.

Paula’s love of fashion was not just limited to clothes though. During her interview with The People, she admitted that she used to try some crazy looks with make-up too. She admitted to raiding her mother’s make-up cabinets, and would also spend her own pocket money on tons of different eye shadow creams and lipsticks. However, she confesses that the make-up she used to put on herself was not suitable for wearing on trips outside the house.

“And it was fun to use make-up – but the make-up I’d do [my mom] would never let me leave the house with,” she said. “It was way too garish for ten years old!”

Prefers the natural look

Before you all rush to find the best cable providers to watch Paula’s beauty on screen, here are her secrets to a healthy glow. These days, Paula is more likely to be spotted wearing more natural make-up looks. She told The People how she found it very important to feel fresh, especially when on long photo shoots and filming sessions. This means that she doesn’t like to plaster her face with cosmetics, but likes to always be wearing something to make her appear fresh faced.
“I put a little on every day, regardless of if I’m going to be on camera or not. It makes me feel like I’m ready to face the day,” Paula revealed.

She also admitted that her hectic lifestyle – combining being an A list film star with being a mother to her 20 month old son Julian – means that she often feels she looks tired. “Having a little one in the house means you’re always tired, so making yourself look less tired is a good thing,” she declared.

Paula reveals the secret to her flawless and effortless chic look is a little subtle lip colour or cheek colour. Natural colours are best for lips, she says; “a berry colour, or even a soft nude.” Cheek colour is key to looking fresh, healthy and awake, Paula advises. “It makes such a big difference on your face, and lets your eyes come through.”

Laughter key to beauty

However, the real secret to Paula’s radiant beauty appears to be something more natural. Her top tip for always looking her best is put down to one simple thing – laughter. Laughing, she says, is paramount to achieving real beauty. “I think it affects the way you look overall,” she said. “I don’t know how many people are getting ten hours of sleep a night, but you find someplace within and let that [beauty] emanate outward.”

When asked about eating habits, Paula says she is no crazy dieter. A comforting thing for any of us to her, Paula likes junk food “like everybody else.”

“But you have to drink a lot of water, have your greens,” she advises. It’s nice to know you can be beautiful and human!

During the event, Paula Patton also took pictures, answered questions and dined with bloggers and fashionista’s inside The Source by Wolfgang Puck on Pennsylvania Avenue. The original Who Framed Roger Rabbit was actually released back in 1988, and combined live action and animation. Of course, you might suspect that Paula Patton might be used to voice a reboot of the character of Jessica Rabbit, the bewitching supper club singer, who was often seen wearing dazzling dresses and the type of diamond rings at 77Diamonds.com, as well as plenty of other glamorous attire.

However. This is not the role in which she is believed to have been cast, and instead Patton is set to star as Witch Boom.

The original movie was a huge success, and received an overwhelmingly positive critical reception, prompting plans for a sequel soon afterwards. The movie which then went into production was actually a prequel titled Toon Platoon, which told the story of Roger Rabbit’s early years. Steven Spielberg was attached to direct but dropped out, and a re-write of the script was commissioned in 1997. Alan Menken also wrote a collection of songs for the movie, whilst Eric Goldberg came on board as the director of animation.

Test footage for this movie was filmed during 1998, and this was when the project came to a halt. The mix of CGI, traditional animation and live-action did not please Disney. The mix of visual techniques was no longer considered impressive, and to convert all the animated characters to CGI would have cost the studio in excess of $100 million.

The production was cancelled until 2007, when producer and director Frank Marshall revealed that he was still open to the idea. The writers if the original movie, Jeffrey Price & Peter S. Seaman, were then called in to put together a new script, which many of the cartoon sequences being put together digitally. In 2010, the movie’s original associate producer, Don Hahn, confirmed the sequel, with Patton being cast shortly afterwards.

American actress Paula Patton first hit the movie scene back in 2005 with her leading role in the movie “London”. Born on December 5, 1975, Ms. Patton is most known for her roles in films such as “Idlewild” and “Jumping the Broom”. She was born in Los Angeles to parents Joyce and Charles Patton. Although she started out at UC Berkeley, one year later she chose to make the move to USC Film School where she graduated with honors. Upon graduation, she began a three month stint making PBS documentaries. She later worked as a producer on the show “Medical Diaries” seen on the Discovery Health Channel.

Paula Patton’s career began with a lead role as Alex in the movie “London” back in 2005. In this film, she worked with greats such as Eva Mendes and Will Smith. She followed this up the same year with a supporting role in “Hitch” where she played Mandy and the following year acted with Big Boi and Andre Benjamin in the hit “Idlewild”. Her acting career only took off from there.

Ms. Patton acted in a number of films over the next few years. Her filmography includes such movies as “Mirrors” with Keifer Sutherland and “Deja Vu” with Val Kilmer and Denzel Washington. She almost made the movie to television as she was offered a role on the hit TV show “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”. This did not pan out though as she was offered the lead female part in “Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol”. She appeared in one episode of “Law & Order: SVU” before bowing out.

“Jumping the Broom” is Ms. Patton’s latest movie. Released on May 6, 2011 in theaters, it is currently available on both Blu-Ray and DVD. African Americans often follow a tradition of the bride and groom leaping over a broom upon completion of the marital vows which is how this movie received its name. The basis of this movie is similar to many others that have been seen in the past.

In the film “Jumping the Broom”, two families from different classes must come together when their children choose to marry. The groom comes from a working class family while the bride comes from an upper class background. The bride and groom choose not to announce their marriage until they are forced to as they realize their mothers will not be pleased. The movie focuses on the meeting of the two families in Chilmark which is located on Martha’s Vineyard. Paula Patton plays the bride in this film and is matched with Lax Alonso. Supporting cast for this film includes Mike Epps and Angela Bassett among others.

In “Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol” Paula Patton plays Jane Carter. She stars with Tom Cruise in an action packed thriller that will be released on December 21, 2011. Here the Impossible Mission Force has to go undercover to investigate the bombing of the Kremlin by terrorists. The team is to be blamed for carrying out this attack when in fact they are responsible for finding the responsible parties. All members of the team are warned that, if captured, they will be tried as terrorists and charged with inciting global nuclear war. The cast of this movie includes such names as Josh Holloway, Ving Rhames and Lea Seydoux.

Ms. Patton also has her next project lined up. She will by playing Witch Broom in the film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2″. This film will be released in 2013 and is already highly anticipated. She may appear in other films between now and then. Only time will tell so be on the lookout for her next big hit.

But in an appearance on Chelsea Lately, Paula assured fans that no, the couple did not adopt a Russian baby, and yes, she is in fact Julian’s biological mother.

“Blackness takes time,” joked Patton, who said that people often mistake her for the nanny when she’s out in public with her son.

Though she says — in jest — that she’s threatened to cover the tot in baby oil and sit him out in the sun, Paula’s certain that little Julian will start to look more like his mother in due time adding, “A tan is coming in, the hair’s curlier…..”

So, it’s okay. In the case of Julian Thicke, Paula Patton is the baby’s mother!

CraveOnline: Paula, did you jump a broom when you got married?

Paula Patton: I did not. Honestly, I’ve got to be really real with you. I did not know of the tradition of jumping the broom until I read the script and that’s the truth. A lot of my friends who have gotten married, they didn’t do it. When I read the script and I started talking to people, I realized it was a tradition. It’s not something that’s done all the time but it is something that’s done. I was fascinated by it and I would have because I love that idea. I think the idea that you’re sweeping the past away and you’re forming a union, you’re jumping into the future to become a family, is a beautiful idea.

CraveOnline: Can’t you still do it retroactively?

Paula Patton: Absolutely. Listen, you can get married as many times as you want to to whoever you want to and to the same person if you want to. What woman doesn’t love to put on that big dress and have a party? So yes, I would.

CraveOnline: Does the director tell you how happy to make your character in each scene?

Paula Patton: I don’t know if he says how happy to make it but Salim is a brilliant director. Honestly, when you see the film and you see what he’s done and the way that all the characters come full circle and you feel very satisfied in the movie, that’s a credit to him as a director. He does see the full picture so happy might not be the problem but him understanding that you need to save some emotion because we’ve got this scene coming up and maybe do a little more, do a little less. He’s just really a quiet brilliant man that, as Laz always says, never lost his cool. We just all trusted in him so whatever he said, we basically did. And I have to say, I’ve got to give Laz some credit because I knew when I was working with Laz how incredible he was, but then when I saw the film, what I think is really brilliant about his role and that people need to know is that while he’s a man and in many ways has to play the straight man, his ability to allow his vulnerability to show was what was so beautiful and believable and subtle and so difficult to play, that he really deserves so much credit for being able to be a man and a man that women will fantasize about as saying, “I would love that kind of husband.” And then have a heart that’s open enough and sensitive enough to make you really believe it when his girl leaves and that he really wants her back and that he’ll humble himself. Or when all his boys are saying, “Hey, you better go after her” and he doesn’t but then you see him later at the end of the night trying to be like, “Sabrina, Sabrina!” To be able to be a really cool guy and be a very masculine man, then be able to play the great lover and companion to a woman was so well done.

CraveOnline: Paula, how happy and excited were you to be part of the team on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol?

Paula Patton: I mean, it was the surprise of a lifetime. I was meant to go on and do 10 episodes for Law & Order. I had just finished Jumping the Broom and I had one week at home and they asked me if I’d come in and read for the director. I did and then a couple days later, they asked me to do a chemistry screen test with Tom Cruise. Then I did and a few days later I found out I got it. Really I thank the grace and the good will of Dick Wolf for allowing me to leave Law & Order. I did one episode in good faith to them and then they said, “You know what? This is a life changing opportunity. We don’t want to hold you back. Go ahead and do this film.” It was a dream come true in many ways.

CraveOnline: Was action heroine always a fantasy of yours?

Paula Patton: Absolutely. I am a very athletic woman and my mom had to teach me how to walk like a lady. She was like, “Don’t walk like a duck. What are you doing?” With all those soccer practices and track practice, she was like, “Put your feet together and get it together, lady.” So I have a very aggressive sort of masculine personality inside of myself and it was wonderful to be able to let that go forth and especially after being pregnant, they asked me to do all my own stunts which I embraced right away. So it was a very empowering role to play. I had a blast.

Director Salim Akil, in a confident feature directorial debut, and a sparkling ensemble cast, working from Elizabeth Hunter and Arlene Gibbs’ insightful script, create an exuberant comedy of universal appeal that easily flows between satire and seriousness.

This endearing picture is proof that it is still possible for a major studio release to be fun, smart and heart-tugging and devoid of numbskull violence and equally numbing special effects.

Corporate attorney Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) and handsome Wall Streeter Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso) meet cute in time-honored movie fashion and are soon ready to marry — though the refined Watsons don’t actually meet Jason’s mother, Pam (Loretta Devine), a folksy Brooklyn postal worker, until the posh wedding at the Watsons’ grand Martha’s Vineyard estate.

Pam feels slighted, thus making the unthinking, casual condescension on the part of Sabrina and her mother (Angela Bassett) toward Pam and Jason’s working class family seem so much worse, ultimately threatening to derail the nuptials themselves.

The Watson women are especially dismissive of Pam’s wanting Sabrina and Jason to jump over a broom, which is how slaves signified they were wedded at a time when legal marriage was forbidden to them.

Beneath a façade of wealth and prestige the Watsons are hiding a couple of humdinger secrets, and while it’s easy to sympathize with Pam’s hurt feelings, she’s a possessive mother who overreacts disastrously. Bassett and Devine have long been formidable actresses, and both excel as very different women who often seem unlikable but also possess the capacity to win our respect.

Patton and Alonso are persuasive as they struggle to cope with escalating unexpected events, and the film boasts a splendid supporting cast. Racial issues are not ignored but handled deftly.

The film’s zinger moment occurs when one of the groom’s family comes on to one of Sabrina’s beautiful bridesmaids, explaining he usually doesn’t go for “dark women, but I’ll make an exception for you.”

Patton, who achieved a breakthrough dramatic performance as teacher Ms. Rain in “Precious,” resorted to peculiar Internet advice to keep the beasts at bay, and it worked for a while — even if it made the 35-year-old actress smell like an old man’s medicine cabinet.

“I looked on the net because I know that mosquitoes eat me alive,” Patton said during a press day at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. “I found that if you use amber Listerine — you know, the yellow kind that your dad used that no one uses anymore? You spray that all over your body and it keeps mosquitoes away. I smelled so bad and it worked for a while, but then they were like, ‘Whatever.’ At one point, I was using amber Listerine, DEET and an armband — we tried everything to keep these guys away, but they were resilient and aggressive.”

It was an unusually rustic environment for a lavish wedding film: Lunenburg has a population of 2,300 humans and, joining the mosquitoes in the unpleasant infestation department, a large community of bats. But Patton said the cast, including Loretta Devine, Angela Bassett, Mike Epps, Meagan Good and Laz Alonso, bonded through it all.

“I say this all the time — I can’t help it — but it’s hard to get that many people together, especially actors, and have them get along,” she said. “And we did — we all did. In some ways, it was a luxury, because it brought us together.”

Patton gained her first wide exposure in “Idlewild,” the ambitious 2006 period musical by the Atlanta hip-hop duo OutKast. Despite her convincing performance and a family background that suggests musicality — she is married to blue-eyed soul singer Robin Thicke — Patton said that she didn’t actually sing in the film. Or, to be clear, her voice wasn’t used.

“Well, I really sang, but it was like singing to Aretha Franklin in the shower. You think you sound like Aretha, but it’s not true,” she said. “I would love to do it again: It was a period piece, all the beautiful costumes and to look like I was a beautiful singer when I truly am not.”

From there, Patton’s career stayed on an upward trajectory, appearing in Tony Scott’s “Deja Vu” with Denzel Washington, “Precious” and last year’s romantic comedy with Queen Latifah and Common, “Just Wright.”

Later this year, Patton’s career gets its biggest boost when she appears with Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner in director Brad Bird’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” She said her recent opportunities keep her ridiculously busy, but she feels lucky to get such high-profile work. And it’s happening just a year after giving birth to her first son, Julian, which presents its own set of challenges.

“It’s called lots of coffee and no sleep,” Patton said, laughing. “It obviously feels great — all of it’s a dream.

“It’s a miracle to be able do the thing you love, especially in Hollywood where you know how difficult that is and you know how competitive it is. I think you always have to stay in a place of thankfulness and remember how precious it is to do what you love in such a competitive art form.”

Speakeasy sat down with Patton in Los Angeles.

Speakeasy: I imagine you’ve had the opportunity to do similar sorts of films, but this is the first one you’ve done. What about this one in particular appealed to you?

Paula Patton: It was just the script. A script is always a work in progress when you’re making a movie, but [it’s great] when you can see a blueprint where you go, “the potential is here to make a great movie,” that’s what it was from me – Sabrina was there on the page. And it wasn’t about race in the end, even though we can’t help it when we see a black film to talk about race; to me it was more an issue of class, and of family, and the drama that goes on when two families get together.

What was sort of at the heart of this character for you? At the beginning of the film she makes some bad decisions, but obviously she’s together in other ways.

It was [producer] T.D. Jakes’ idea that at the beginning of the movie begin with this girl having slept with this guy, and that she’s made some bad choices and she’s a human being. I think that’s what’s great about T.D. Jakes as a producer and as a pastor and in charge of so many churches and being a faith-based man, is that he understands that human beings are flawed.

Because this film is so much about family and how it makes us who we are, how much did you take cues for your performance from the other actors?

The truth is that I was able to take from my own life that you have your mother, and when she’s great she stands for certain values and morals and ways to be, but that doesn’t necessarily make her the most fun to be around. And, we sometimes go to the fun party aunt, uncle, cousin, whatever it is, to talk about some things that you don’t feel like you can talk with your mom about.

How careful are you having to be with your choices in your career? Can you purely follow your creativity, or do you have to be strategic about what roles you take on?

I try to live in a vacuum when I’m working, and I don’t think about the audience in some respects. I do want to please them, and so I do try to remember that movies are entertainment; you don’t just want to create reality but you want to entertain them as well, so I do care very much about pleasing the audience. But beyond the scope of that, I’m not thinking about other directors, or how producers will see me. I just can only hope and pray that if I go with my heart, everything else will follow they way that it’s supposed to. But I think if you scheme or plan too much, you don’t let magic come into your life. And magic is what makes movies special and great – the risk, the jump off the cliff and hope that the net appears.

GlobalGrind rarely sees Paula and Robin together, and we definitely haven’t seen much of baby Julian, so it’s refreshing to lay eyes on such a cute little boy. Blonde-haired baby Julian seemes super happy as he looked at all the people passing by.

The pleasant but but insubstantial comedy Jumping the Broom — produced by Dallas-based preacher T.D. Jakes, who also has a small part in the film — is a culture-clash comedy about two African-American families squaring off during a weekend-long wedding on Martha’s Vineyard.

Sabrina (Paula Patton) is the well-to-do bride, whose uptight mother (Angela Bassett) barks orders at her household staff and occasionally lapses into highfalutin French. Jason (Laz Alonso) is the groom, an investment banker from a working-class Brooklyn family. His mother (Loretta Devine) is a postal worker, overprotective and easily slighted, determined that the wedding be a traditional African-American one.

Both families, of course, have secrets that are revealed in melodramatic, not-entirely-convincing fashion. Inevitably, the bonds between Sabrina and Jason are tested, only to be finally strengthened.

In other words, you’ve seen this sort of wedding-from-hell movie many times before, and director Salim Akil and writers Elizabeth Hunter and Arlene Gibbs do themselves no favors by giving the two leads so little to do. As Bassett and Devine try to out-diva one another, the lovely Patton and the very handsome Alonso recede into the background of their own movie — they’re a Barbie and Ken doll set that the rest of the cast gets to toy with.

Sabrina is supposed to be a morally complicated figure (she’s taken a vow of chastity prior to the

wedding, after having slept with too many men in her youth), and Jason has his own share of intriguing hang-ups about his family. Yet neither character seems fully animated, and there’s nothing at stake between them; of course, they’re going to end up together and help their warring families find common ground.

Still, there’s something to be said for a movie that attempts to reckon with class and cultural differences among contemporary African-Americans (when Spike Lee tried to do this, two-plus decades ago in the brazen “School Daze,” he was widely derided by critics and audiences alike). And the filmmakers are at least smart enough to fill out the story with any number of sweet subplots (current “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Romeo plays a Yale student who has the hots for Tasha Smith’s Shonda, the much-older best friend of Jason’s mother), and funny supporting players (the wonderful Mike Epps, as Jason’s wisecracking uncle, can do no wrong).

Hardly groundbreaking or even especially memorable, but “Jumping the Broom” (the title refers to a wedding tradition among black families) nonetheless leaves a smile on your face.

Melissa Sagemiller of TNT’s ‘Raising the Bar’ will replace Patton on the hit NBC series. Patton was tapped to play ADA Mikka Von on a recurring basis, but now she’ll appear in one episode before Sagemiller takes on the recurring ADA role in October.

According to TV Guide, Sagemiller will be an ADA from Brooklyn who respects Stabler and Benson.

Executive producer Neal Baer said Patton’s character will go out in a big way.

“Right before Paula started her first episode — which she’s shooting right now — she was offered a test for ‘Mission Impossible 4,’” Baer told TV Guide Magazine. “We had a contract, but I don’t want to stand in someone’s career path if they’re going to be in a huge feature film with Tom Cruise. So when she got that role, we recast ours.”

Sagemiller appeared in a 2000 episode of ‘SVU’ as Becky Sorenson. Her other TV credits include an episode of ‘The Guardian,’ ‘Sleeper Cell’ and ‘Without a Trace.’
